Each week for twelve consecutive weeks, I am uploading a soundscape poem on my Soundcloud page as part of a special series “Bound: for Amelia Rosselli” I created to mark time in lockdown.
“Bound: for Amelia Rosselli” is an homage to Amelia Rosselli, a trilingual poet and one of the most important Italian poets of the twentieth century. Rosselli was an exile and a poet of mixed heritage: Italian father and English mother. She was born in Paris in 1930; at the age of seven she lost her father who was prosecuted and murdered by the Mussolini’s regime. Her English mother was a political activist and her grandmother a Venetian Jewish feminist, playwright and translator. In her trilingual work Diary in Three tongues (1955-1956), Rosselli “employs textual strategies which convey the fragmentation and restructuring of language, where her traumatic experience resides as a wound inflicted on the symbolic order” (Pina Antinucci, 2015). Rosselli who moved constantly between languages (Italian, English and French), territories and cultures was also an educated musicologist with an acute sense for prosody and rhythm in poetic language. Sadly, Rosselli died in Rome in 1996 after having committed suicide. She has been and continues to be an important inspiration for my own multilingual writing practice.
